Exhibit Planning Progress Report 1 "Bond Watches, James Bond Watches" |

Columbia, Pennsylvania (12/14/2009)— As updated on the bondwatches Twitter last week, we’re now looking at in excess of 150 pieces for possible display at the upcoming “Bond Watches, James Bond Watches” exhibition. The centerpiece, of course, will be Ian Fleming’s only known Rolex 1016 Explorer – which served as his reference for the original James Bond wristwatch as he described it in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. This Fleming-Bond Rolex will be on display throughout the National Watch & Clock Museum exhibition, which runs June 17, 2009, through May of 2011. Last Friday, I met with the Museum Director and staff to discuss messaging and area allocations. “Bond Watches, James Bond Watches” will not only be what we believe to be the first of its kind presentation of all confirmed wristwatches “from Ian Fleming to EON Productions,” but also a unique timeline through which societal, technology, and marketing influences on horology can be examined and better understood. Now that we’ve obtained properties and commitments that have already exceeded our wildest hopes for the “must show” list we started out with in 2008, we can look at “nice to haves,” multiples, and improving on what we already have in hand. In terms of visitors’ experience, the impressive National Watch & Clock Museum design team will approach this project on two tracks. |
|
The first will be larger story areas that will overview James Bond watches in the context of Albert R. “Cubby” Broccoli’s EON Productions and the literary 007 adventures of creator Ian Fleming. We’ll also look at the over all role of “time” as it serves this genre (Mr. Fleming consistently referred to these as “thrillers”), as well as setting the record straight with regard to James Bond and affiliated brands, including product placements. Dedicated kiosks will highlight individual wristwatches, primarily in film and historical contexts. An amazing number of watches worn by the James Bond character were, in their in their own rights, innovative breakthroughs for the time in which they were first offered. Look for three types of watches here. The first category, of course, includes the actual watch worn by the James Bond character. The second, an authentic consumer-version that you or I might have bought from an authorized retailer for the legitimate brand. Finally, we’ll have licensed products. So: Breitling, Fossil, Gilbert, Hamilton, Omega, Rolex, SEIKO, Swatch, and – well, a surprise or two for many fans, I’m sure. The National Watch & Clock Museum is also creating its own brand for the exhibit. This both reflects a key element of what we’re presenting, and should provide an additional bit of quality assurance for those looking to visit. “Yup, you’re in the right place—this is where you’re gonna see only the real stuff.” Other things on the near-term horizon include a teaser video that’s going into production this week and should be posted to the Internet shortly. (Who will be the first to site that? Keep your eyes pealed!) As Guest Curator, I provided a number of my own pieces for use in creating these longer-lead promotions; it’ll be good to help me adjust to being without them for a little over a year, starting next June. Special events are going to be tied to the exhibition as well. These will also allow for dedicated “James Bond interest” and “WIS interest” get-togethers. So look for those announcements when we’ve locked down dates, along with lead-presenters and resources.
As much as my excitement has grown with each step along
the way here, actually walking our space in the special exhibits area
and seeing something like a third of our potential exhibit items set out
in one place, well, that really kicked things up by leaps and bounds for
me.
